Wild Tome of the Woods
Quickspin’s September 2019 release, Wild Tome of the Woods has a fairytale, enchanted woods theme starring a bunch anthropomorphic animal characters and their gold hungry friend Tom the wizard.
So, the Quickspin narrative goes, Tom and his pals (half frog/half newt Crikey, the fox Sylvester the 3rd, and the posh owl from Oxford named Eleanor) live in Whittlewood Forest, a former medieval hunting ground in Northamptonshire, England. Tom is obsessed with gold, so much so that his friends all call him middy (short for Midas). Anyway, Tom’s obsession is now creating a problem in that his Wild Tome is now turning everything it touches to gold, even his friends! Now that’s all clear let’s get on with describing the game itself.
WTOTW is played on a 6x4 reel set and comes with 26 paylines and an RTP of 96.28%. According to Quickspin, it is 4/5 for volatility so firmly in the medium/high bracket. It also comes with a top win of 1,000x.
The biggest wins come from the game’s only feature, the Wild Tome feature during which it is possible to fill the entire board with wilds for a maximum 1,000x win.
You can play Wild Tome of the Woods from €0.25 to €100 per spin.
Design & Symbols
Quickspin slots are always a treat aesthetically, and WTOTW is no exception. It has a detailed cartoon design, set in the midst of an English countryside forest with plenty of foliage, undergrowth, toadstools and gnarled, old trees with winding branches. More trees are visible in the distance, their canopies blocking out most of the natural light, with just the odd shaft breaking through to dimly light the surrounding forest. The reels are floating with no surrounding frame. The accompanying music is calm and chilled with birdsong in the background – the kind of thing you’re likely to hear being pumped into the relaxation room of a spa.
Low value symbols are green, yellow, and red vials of magic potions. High value symbols are the Newt, the Fox, and the Owl. The Owl is the highest paying regular symbol, awarding 16x the bet size for 6 on a payline. The other symbol is the Wild Tome, a red book which transforms into other symbols and eventually into a wild. The wild is a golden book cover. All regular symbols come stacked on the reels
The Wild Tome Feature
The Wild Tome feature is triggered whenever a Wild Tome symbol lands anywhere on the reels. After landing, the tome transforms into any of the regular symbols currently visible on the board, after which it, along with all other examples of the symbol on the board, transform into wilds. It is possible for the last symbol to be transformed to change into another Wild Tome. When this happens, the process starts again choosing a different visible symbol to turn wild. If you’re really lucky, this chain reaction results in a full board of wilds, triggering the ALL WILDS WIN feature which pays 1,000x.
Our Thoughts on Wild Tome of the Woods
This is a tough one to judge; it looks good, plays smoothly, offers consistent wins (albeit generally mediocre ones), and has a feature which has good potential and is quite exciting once you get on a roll. On the downside, there’s not really enough potential to make it truly exciting, and the general lack of features means that unless you’re on a very hot streak, it can get pretty boring quite quickly.
Personally, I had a fun time playing, but I suspect that is because of a significant chunk of beginner’s luck which saw me hit features and several big wins way over the RTP. However, from the few dry spells I did endure, I could see how this game may not be as good as it looks.
