Within a week of the release of NetEnt’s much anticipated Dead or Alive 2, Nolimit City weighed in with a Wild West Gun-slinging slot of their own. Tombstone was released exclusively with Leo Vegas from 18th April to 1st May and on general release from May 2nd.
Tombstone is a high variance slot played on a 5 reel slot with a 2-3-3-3-2 set up and 108 paylines. Big wins in this game are created by expanding wilds with multipliers, and a selection of trigger-able free spin rounds.
Tombstone comes with a published RTP of 96.18%, a maximum win of over 11,000x the stake, and is playable at participating casinos from €0.10 to €50 a spin.
Design & Symbols
Like Dead or Alive 2 the gameboard for Tombstone is framed by wooden cross beams with dusty plains and rocky outcrops in the distance. However, the action here takes place in the window of a saloon and the artwork is on the whole more cartoonlike than its NetEnt rival. In the background a typical spaghetti western type soundtrack is interspersed with faint gunshots.
The low value symbols are the royals J, Q, K, and A. Higher value symbols are represented by revolvers, horseshoes, bags of cash, a pile of gold bars, and sticks of dynamite. The dynamite is the highest paying of the regular symbols, awarding 6x the bet size for 5 on a payline. Wilds only appear on reels 2, 3, and 4 and are 3 symbols high. The wilds are designed to look like wanted posters with each reel having its own character. The three wild characters are the moustachioed horse thief Skinny Joe, mean looking bank-robbing cowgirl Edda Star, and the notorious bandit, “El Gordo”. There are two sets of scatters; ‘Justice’ scatters which are a Sherriff’s badge and a Marshall’s badge which land on reels 1 and 5 only, and Gunslinger scatters which take the form of dollar signs and which only appear on reels 2, 3, and 4.
The outlaw wilds are a feature in themselves, on top of which the game benefits from Justice and Gunslinger spins. Get really lucky and you’ll earn Bounty Spins.
Whenever an Outlaw Wild lands it automatically steps up or down (unless it covers the reel) to fill the reel. The number of steps taken to fill the reel is then added to the wild as a multiplier. As such, any wins resulting from the spin and full reel wild will have this multiplier applied. The Outlaw Wilds also play a big part in both sets of free spins as you’ll find out below.
3 Justice Spins are triggered by landing a Sherriff’s badge on reel 1 and a Marshall’s badge on reel 5. During Justice Spins any Outlaw Wilds which land remain sticky for the remainder of the free spins.
Gunslinger Spins are considerably harder to trigger than Justice Spins and require 3 dollar scatters to land on reels 2, 3, and 4. Activating Gunslinger Spins awards 10 free spins. During Gunslinger Spins any win multipliers earned after landing Outlaw Wilds will remain throughout the feature. The Wilds, however, are not sticky during Gunslinger Spins. Any scatters which land during the round will earn an extra free spin.
If you’re fortunate enough to combine both sets of scatters in the same base game spin then 12 Bounty Spins will be awarded. Bounty Spins combine the features of both the Justice and Gunslinger spins with sticky wilds, sticky multipliers, and extra free spins with every scatter landed during the round.
Our Thoughts on Tombstone
Considering it's up against some tough competition in Dead or Alive 2, Tombstone more than manages to hold its own. The design is superbly executed and considerable thought has gone into getting the balance between features and game play right. It’s a high variance slot but there is enough action generated by the Outlaw Wilds and the Justice Spins to keep you hanging around long enough to reap the bigger rewards on offer from the Gunslinger and Bounty Spins.
Still relative newcomers as providers, Nolimit City are really starting to ramp things up in 2019. In a 2018 interview their CEO stated that they intended to double their slot portfolio to 24 titles this year. Thus far they are looking true to their word with Tombstone being their fourth release in as many months. If they can keep producing games with this type of quality then surely it can’t be long before Nolimit City are playing with the big boys?
