Design and Symbols
The design of Starquest is certainly competent but certainly not outstanding. The transparent game board is set on a background of a standard space scene. The scene is static but for the occasional shooting star flying towards the screen from either side of the game board. The soundtrack is your standard space slot busy synth riff with a double-time electronic percussive beat.
There are 10 symbols, the lowest value of which are the standard 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A.
Higher up the paytable are green, blue, and red gemstones. The highest paying symbol is the Starquest logo which pays 15x bet size for 6 in a row. It’s worth bearing in mind that this is considerably more than 6 in a row of the next highest paying symbol (the red gem) which pays 3x bet size. There is also a shapely space maiden wild symbol which covers an entire reel of up to 5 symbols
Special features are a bit thin on the ground in Starquest with the wild symbol creating the only action outside of the standard spins. However, Megaways is a feature in itself so and if you’re not familiar we’ll attempt to enlighten you below.
The first thing to note about the Megaways™ system is that it pays for all the usual combinations both from left to right and right to left which immediately opens up more ways to win than the standard slot. The ways to win are really increased, however, by the expanding reels.
On every spin of the 6 reels, the number of symbols per reel can vary between 2-7. In Starquest every one of the 6 reels is capable of spinning in 7 symbols.
Three or more identical symbols appear on adjacent rows from the left or right qualifies as a winning pay line. In theory, there are 117,649 ways to pay – although in reality the likelihood of hitting the maximum is very remote. You can monitor the ways to win each spin via the meter at the top of the game board.
Full Reel Wilds & Respin
Wilds not only add increasing multipliers to any win but are also sticky with respins. In the first instance, the full reel wild (which represents up to 5 symbols) is just a 1x multiplier. However, after the spin, the wild stays in place for one respin and the multiplier increases to 2x.
If another wild symbol land during this spin then both wilds will stick for another respin and multipliers will increase by one for both wilds for the subsequent spin. Furthermore, if a win registers then it will be multiplied by both wild multipliers (ie: if one wild has 2x and the other 3x multiplier then any attached win will be multiplied by 6x). Wilds multipliers will increase with every respin up to a maximum of 5x.
Our Thoughts on Starquest
Despite featuring the Megaways™ system, one of the most successful innovations in online slot history, Starquest left us feeling a little flat. The design is somewhat unadventurous and the high volatility combined with the distinct lack of features can make for a tedious experience.
We did manage to land some big wins via the wild respins, and the RTP is decent. However, when all is said and done if you want to play a Megaways™ game then we’d suggest looking at some of BTG’s other releases like bonanza, or Extra Chilli. In fact, maybe check out Blueprint gaming who have used Megaways to great effect with Buffalo Rising and Irish Riches.
