- Free Spins with up to 1,000x Win Multiplier
- Highly Volatile Action
NetEnt are famed for their low/medium variance games (Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest), but occasionally they let loose with a highly volatile beast with huge potential (Dead or Alive 2). It’s the latter category into which Rome: The Golden Age falls, with big variance and big potential, offering a massive max win of 100,000x the bet size. NetEnt’s first foray into the Gladiatorial arena sees players fighting hard against a dangerous beast for the spoils of war.

How to win big in Rome The Golden Age – Free Spins
Scatters on reels 2, 3, and 4 of this 5 reel slot trigger 3 free spins. Visually, the board remains the same size but the action moves to the Gladiatorial Arena with a Lion to the left of the reels in combat with a Gladiator to the right. Also, the reels, which appear in a 3, 4, 5, 4, 3 configuration, now only contain Rome symbols and blanks. Spaces which are already framed on the triggering spin become Rome symbols and remain sticky throughout. Each time a new Rome symbol lands the Free Spins reset to 3 while the symbols spin to reveal a cash win of between 0.5x and 50x the bet size. Free Spins end after 3 non-winning spins, or if the board is filled with Rome symbols.
At the end of the round the sticky Rome symbols also spin to reveal cash wins and all wins are added together. The total is then multiplied by the win multiplier accrued prior to triggering Free Spins (explained in next section). Filling the entire board multiplies the overall win by 2x.
- The Golden Age Symbol
- Free Spins Multiplier
The Golden Age Symbol (a gold coin with the Emperor’s head) is the key to big wins in this game. After landing, the space it occupied is framed in gold. Occasionally, the Golden Age Symbol randomly turns into a Rome symbol which turns the space into an ‘active’ frame. Active frames turn into wilds on the next spin. Furthermore, any frames bordering the active frame also turn wild, as do any frames bordering these frames, and so on. Once frames have turned wild they disappear from the board.
The other function of Golden Age symbols is to feed the Free Spins Win Multiplier meter above the game board. Each Golden Age symbol which lands without a frame adds 1 point to the meter. A Golden Age symbol landing on a framed space adds between 1 and 4 points to the meter. Reaching 200 points moves the win multiplier up to the next level.
The Free Spins Win Multiplier increases in the following increments: x1, x2, x3, x5, x7, x10, x12, x15, x20, x30, x40, x50, x75, x100, x200, x300, x500, x750, x1,000. This win multiplier is only applied at the end of the next Free Spins bonus game.
Look and Feel of Rome The Golden Age
Rome: The Golden Age looks very typical of slots in this genre. The base game action takes place looking out from what appears to be the marbled Royal enclosure with pillars either side and opened red drapes revealing the gameboard and action in the arena. As previously described, the action changes location to the Gladiatorial pit during Free Spins.
The game uses standard royals as low value symbols and various gladiatorial artefacts as high value symbols with a Tiger as the highest paying of all, awarding 5x the bet size for a full payline. See all symbols and win values below.
Rome: The Golden Age, offers great potential and some unique features. While being quite fun to play, the symbol values are low and there is a big reliance on the active frame/wild cluster feature to maintain your balance while awaiting the bonus round. Also, the likelihood of getting anywhere near the 100,000x max win is remote, to say the least, as Free Spins trigger on average every 195 spins, and you’re unlikely to raise the win multiplier too far in that time.
Nevertheless, this is a fine offering from NetEnt and one which can deliver some mind-boggling wins if the Emperor of luck gives you the thumbs up.
