Design & Symbols
The game opens with Ozzy, replete in a full-length cloak of black feathers, sitting on a throne at the entrance of a sinister-looking stone castle. This entrance provides the game’s backdrop, with horned skulls either atop stone pillars either side of the floating reels. Cloaked in darkness, the design’s creepy gothic horror comic book style is very much in keeping with the Ozzy vibe. In the background, licks from some of Ozzy and Sabbath’s greatest hits blare out.
Low value symbols are roses, crucifixes, skulls, and ravens each placed on one of the four card suits. High-value symbols are all of Ozzy in various poses on different coloured backgrounds; blue, green, orange, or red. Red Ozzy is the most valuable with 5 on a payline worth 50x the bet size. The wild is a horned vampire bat and the scatter is the devil’s armoured tank. The scatter symbols only appear on reels 1, 3, and 5.
- Bonus Bet
- Symbol Charge Up
- Free Spins
The bonus bet gives you the opportunity to play with a few notable advantages over a regular spin; the RTP increased from 96.3% to 96.67%, an additional free spin is awarded when triggered, and higher multiplier values apply when awarded. All good stuff, but the price to pay is a 100% increase in your stake.
Symbol Charge Up
The Symbol Charge Up feature is activated in both the respin and free spins features and depends on the outcome of symbol and feature spinners;
- The Symbol Spinner box to the left of the gameboard spins to reveal one of the game’s symbols. This symbol then has a feature attached to it for the respin (or free spins if in the bonus road).
- The Feature Spinner reveals one of 4 features to be applied to the chosen symbol;
Coin Win: Each chosen symbol which lands pay the equivalent of three of a kind
Symbol Multiplier: The chosen symbols have a multiplier of 2x or 3x applied. Bonus Bet spins see the multiplier increase to 5x or 7x
Wild: The chosen symbols all transform into wilds
Upgrade: The chosen symbols transform into the next highest paying symbol.
Landing 2 scatter symbols triggers a respin. Prior to the respin, the Symbol Charge Up feature engages to provide a symbol and an accompanying feature for the duration of the respin.
Landing 3 scatter symbols triggers 4 free spins (5 free spins if playing the Bonus Bet). A scatter symbol landing in the feature spinner box during the Symbol Charge Up prior to a respin also triggers free spins.
During free spins, the Symbol Charge Up feature triggers before every spin. The feature awarded to the corresponding symbol is then applied to that symbol for the remainder of the free spins. More than one multiplier can be added to a single symbol during free spins and those multiplier values are added together and applied to any wins in which they appear. A scatter symbol landing in the symbol spinner box during free spins awards an extra free spin. The maximum number of free spins possible is 7.
Additionally, any symbol awarded the upgrade feature also benefits from any feature previously awarded to the upgraded symbol.
Our Thoughts on Ozzy Osbourne
While there’s nothing revolutionary about this slot it is feature-rich, has a killer soundtrack, and is a thoroughly enjoyable game to play. The appeal may well be lost on the serious grinders as, despite the apparent 10,000x top win, you’ll find the wins on offer small-medium the overwhelming majority of the time. The volatility is middling at best which means you could play for an inordinate amount of time before hitting a truly huge win. On the flip side, you will trigger features way more often which keeps you engaged.
This, in my opinion, is no bad thing when releasing a branded slot which is likely to appeal to newbies and occasional slot players. A bit more bang for your buck is the order of the day here. In fact, it could be argued that there are too many features with too many caveats and modifications. While this is partly true, I didn’t find them especially confusing and once I was familiar with them (which didn’t take long), they didn’t hamper my enjoyment at all.
