Where to play
- Wildboard Respins (Base game)
- Free Spins with Wildboard Respins
Wildboard Respins are triggered by landing tricks. In the basegame a random notice appears above the reels where the ‘Combo Meter’ shows one of the four ‘tricks’ symbols (each shows a different trick being performed by a skater). That symbol landing anywhere on the board triggers a Wildboard Respin.
A skater skates across the reels from one side to the other. Along the way he performs various tricks, leaving 2 wild symbols and an expanded ‘Wildboard’ (skateboard) wild in his wake. The Wildboard occasionally becomes a Golden Wildboard which comes with a win multiplier of between 2x and 10x.
Free Spins with Wildboard Respins
The low value symbols in Skate for Gold are the letters S, K, A, T, and E. Landing those letters in that order anywhere across the reels triggers 12 Free Spins. Throughout Free Spins the combo meter is active above the reels. Three of the four trick symbols are highlighted in the combo meter. Landing the three highlighted symbols in the order they are shown on the combo meter awards 2 free spins and 1 Wildboard Respin. The three symbols and the order in which they appear on the combo meter changes with each new free spin.
Design & Symbols
The background imagery depicts a Californian skate park on a hazy, summers morning. The rising sun to the left of the gameboard creates a silhouette of a skater heading down a halfpipe. Above the palm trees which line either side of the park the occasional seagull flies across the blue skies towards the ocean. The gameboard has grey reels with the game’s logo contained within a squiggly black arrow atop the centre three reels. An upbeat, guitar led, pop/rock tune accompanies play.
Low value symbols, as already mentioned, are the letters S, K, A, T, and E as displayed in the image above.
High value symbols are the four trick skaters and Nyjah Huston. Huston is the highest paying symbol with 5 on a payline awarding 25x the bet size. The wild is a golden ‘W’ spray-painted on a red background with Nyjah’s name across the top. The Wildboard and Golden Wildboard Wilds both contain the same image for the wild but are expanded in the shape of a skateboard deck. Both have an image of a lion above the wild sign with a star on its forehead, with Nyjah’s initials beneath the wild sign. While the regular Wildboard is red, the Golden Wildboard is (naturally) gold, but the spray-painted golden W is replaced with a multiplier value.
Our Thoughts on Nyjah Huston: Skate for Gold
While it has its limitations, on the whole I enjoyed my time playing Nyjah Huston: Skate for Gold. The features appear fairly regularly and any one of them has the potential to deliver a meaningful win. The free spins round is also highly entertaining and usually delivers several mini-retriggers and Wildboard Respins. The design is decent, the soundtrack has that positive skateboarder vibe, and there is potential, with wins of up to 5,000x on offer. I was a little disappointed at the volatility level being so low, I would have thought a high octane sport would justify some high octane variance. However, I can also appreciate that as a branded slot, Play’n GO may wish to avoid scaring off any new business. On balance, although I’d prefer higher, I understand the decision to go for a medium rather than high variance experience. Overall, this a fun slot with a unique theme which should have a wide market appeal.
