iSoftBet expect big things from their lead title of 2021, the much anticipated Moriarty Megaways. The game is based on the rivalry between one of literature’s all-time evil geniuses and his iconic super sleuth nemesis (Professor James Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes). Moriarty Megaways comes as part of iSoftBet’s Twisted Tales series of games which also includes the likes of Morgana and Queen of Wonderland Megaways.
This devilishly detailed slot comes with 3 sets of Megaways reels, over 350,000 ways to win, increasing win multipliers, and a couple of splendid reel modifying features. So far so good, but will the slot live up to the hype? Is this going to be a Moriarty masterpiece or a Sherlock stinker? Let’s take a look.

How to win big in Moriarty Megaways – Free Spins
![trigger free spins pic] The biggest wins come from the game’s main feature; a scatter triggered free spins round with increasing win multipliers.
Three free spins scatters triggers 15 free spins. Any further scatters appear as +5 symbols and each add 5 more spins (up to a maximum of 30).
During free spins each winning combination increases the win multiplier for subsequent wins by 1x.
You’ll notice that during free spins, an additional two sets of reels appear beneath the main set. These are known as “Watson Reels” and “Sherlock Reels” and they are unlocked once their titular character symbol appears a total of 3 times during free spins. The Watson and Sherlock character symbols only appear on the top horizontal reel, and only during free spins.
Upon unlocking Watson’s Reels, they spin once whilst utilising ‘Watson’s Mystery Symbol’. The mystery symbol can appear multiple times on each reel and at the end of the spin, all mystery symbols transform into the same regular symbol. Any winning combo has the same win multiplier applied as the regular reels and also adds 1x to the win multiplier. Further wins occurring from cascading symbols also add 1x to the win multiplier.
Upon unlocking Sherlock’s Reels, they spin once using “Sherlock’s MAX Megaways”. As the name suggests, this feature guarantees all 6 reels land 7 symbols for a 117,649 ways to win spin. Once again, any winning combo and any subsequent winning combos each add 1x to the overall reel multiplier. 3 free spins symbols landing on the top reel during Watson and Sherlock reels add an extra 5 free spins to the main free spins game. Once the Watson or Sherlock Reels spin is complete, you re-join the main board to continue your free spins.
- Megaways up to 352,947 Ways to Win
- Cascading Symbols with Reaction Wins
- Watson’s Mystery Symbols & Sherlock’s Max Megaways
- Moriarty Bet
For those unfamiliar with Megaways slots, the number of paylines, or in this case ‘Megaways’, changes every spin. During both the base and the bonus game the 6 reels contain up to 7 symbols, and that number changes on all reels every spin. The maximum number of Megaways for this reel set up occurs when all 6 reels land 7 symbols on the same spin. 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel constitute a winning combo. As such, ordinarily the highest number of Megaways is 7x7x7x7x7x7, or 117,649.
However, it is possible in Moriarty Megaways to land 352,947 ways to win. This is only possible during free spins, and then only possible if a spin from the main reels not only lands the max Megaways, but also happens to trigger both Watson Reels and Sherlock Reels from the same spin. In the event that both modifiers are triggered during the same spin Watson Reels play out first, followed by Sherlock Reels. If Watson Reels land with max Megaways then the 352,947 ways to win from a single spin will have been achieved!
In Moriarty Megaways, symbols cascade onto the reels rather than spin. After a win is added to your balance, the winning symbols disappear, to be replaced by symbols cascading from above. A winning combo caused by this cascade is called a reaction win. Reaction wins continue until no new winning combo is formed, after which the spin ends. Cascades occur during the base and bonus games.
The reel modifiers which have their own set of reels in free spins (Watson’s Mystery Symbols and Sherlock’s MAX Megaways) also occur in the base game. However, they are triggered at random and take place on the main reel set. A winning combo from either modifier increases the win multiplier by 1x for the next cascade, as do any further wins from this series of reaction wins. Wins through the randomly activated reel modifiers are the only wins during the base game which increase the win multiplier.
A bonus buy option called the ‘Moriarty Bet’ is available for players in most jurisdictions. Purchasing a Moriarty Bet for 150x the chosen bet size, allows you to progress immediately to free spins. As an additional incentive, choose the Moriarty Bet and more Sherlock and Watson triggers are made available than in regular free spins. Furthermore, use the bonus buy option and should your total win from the feature be less than 10x then the ‘Moriarty Guarantee’ is triggered, giving you another 5 free spins. The Moriarty Guarantee retriggers until such time as your winning total is greater than 10x your bet size.
Look and Feel of Moriarty Megaways
Moriarty Megaways is an outstanding looking game. The exquisite artwork depicts a sepia tinted Victorian London at night. Big Ben is visible in the background, as is the famous Baker Street sign. Furthermore, the three protagonists, who all loom large during parts of the game, are superbly detailed and fantastically drawn. The tense soundtrack really adds to the menace, as does the occasionally voiceover from Moriarty himself, usually accompanied by an evil cackle. Holmes also adds his voice to proceedings on occasion with such gems as, “To Baker Street” and “No one can beat the great Sherlock Holmes”.
The low symbols are represented by the card values 9-A. The high value symbols are two chess pieces, Moriarty’s jewel encrusted ring, and Jim Moriarty himself. Moriarty is the highest value symbol, with 6 adjacent symbols worth 50x the bet size. The full paytable can be seen below.
The wild, which only appears on the horizontal reel above reels 2-5, is a gold pocket watch. As far as gameplay goes, Moriarty Megaways is second to none. The free spins feature in particular is superbly entertaining and immersive, as well being capable of delivering some stonking great wins. The game is fast paced, highly volatile, has an outstanding narrative, and is packed with potential. As far as this reviewer is concerned, this is iSoftBet’s most accomplished slot to date.
