Money Train Slot
Wild West-themed slots seem to be rather ‘in vogue’ at the moment, and they all seem to be rather good. Recently we’ve enjoyed NetEnt’s Dead or Alive 2, NoLimit City’s Tombstone, and most recently Yggdrasil’s The One-Armed Bandit. Now we have another to add to that list, Relax Gaming’s latest release, Money Train.
Money Train is a 5x4 reel slot with 40 pay lines and comes with an RTP of 96.2%. As with the previously listed Wild West slots, it is a highly volatile beast which can deliver wins of up to 20,000x times the stake.
When they come, those big wins are sure to come from the game’s only bonus, the Money Cart Bonus Round. Both unique and enjoyable, we’ll explore the Money Cart Bonus, for which there is also a Buy-a-bonus option, in greater detail later on in the review.
Released on 26th July 2019, you can play Money Train from €0.10 to €50 a spin at participating casinos.
Design & Symbols
The artwork and details are superb throughout. All the Wild West slots mentioned above are somewhat similar in style, but I would say that on balance Money Train is right up there with DOA2 in terms of the detail in the design and presentation. When you start the game a steam-powered locomotive heaves into view, and in a nice touch the first couple of carts are carrying parts of the design for Zombie Circus and Temple Tumble Megaways™ - two of Relax’s most popular games to date. The third cart contains Money Train’s gameboard which takes the form of a standard goods carriage with the red wooden doors opened to reveal the floating reels inside the otherwise empty cart. Directly to the left of the gameboard carriage is a big brake lever which doubles as the “Buy Feature” button. The Wild West town is visible behind the railway track with a windmill-powered oil pump slowly rotating beyond the row of buildings and saloons directly behind the carriage. The rawhide type soundtrack is authentic, catchy, and pretty darned good to boot.
In the base game, all symbols (including the wild) come stacked on all reels. The low-value symbols are wooden carved diamonds, clubs, hearts, and spades. The high-value symbols are a lady gunslinger, a menacing Mexican, a fierce-looking Native American, and a stern-faced cowboy. The cowboy is the highest paying, with 5 on a payline awarding 20x the bet size. The wild symbol shows two crossed shotguns, and the scatter is a purple bonus button. There are a series of different symbols used in the bonus game, and we’ll discuss them in detail below.
The only bonus on Money Train is the Money Cart Bonus Round, although there is also a Buy-a-Bonus feature available.
Money Cart Bonus Round
Landing bonus scatters on reels 1, 3, and 5 in the base game triggers the Money Cart Bonus Game with 3 spins. Upon activating the bonus round the three bonus symbols transform into win multipliers of random denominations (one could be x1, or x3 etc). These multipliers will ultimately be counted up and added together at the round's end to determine the bonus win. Other than the three scatters-turned-win multipliers, at this stage every other symbol displayed is a tumbled weed. The win multiplier symbols remain sticky throughout the spins, where the objective is to land more bonus scatters which transform into win multipliers, or one of the 5 additional bonus game symbols listed below.
Payer: Appears as the lady gunslinger wearing an outlaw’s mask. The symbol then reveals a random win multiplier which is then added to every other win multiplier symbol on the board at the end of the spin.
Persistent Payer: Works as above but adds the win multiplier to every other symbol on the board after EVERY spin.
Collector: Appears as the Native American wearing an outlaw’s mask. The symbol then reveals a random multiplier then collects all visible win multipliers and adds them to its own value.
Persistent Collector: Works as above but collects all visible win multipliers and adds them to its own value on EVERY spin.
Widener: Appears as the Mexican wearing an outlaw’s mask. The symbol then reveals a random win multiplier and opens up an additional reel.
Every time a symbol lands on a reel during the bonus game the free spins meter resets to 3. The round ends when no new symbols appear for 3 consecutive spins. At the end of the round all win multipliers are added together to determine the total bonus round win.
Buy a Bonus Feature
Money Train gives you an option to buy straight into the bonus if you’re willing to gamble 80x your preferred stake. Entering the bonus round via the Buy Feature also increases the overall RTP from 96.2% to 98%.
Our Thoughts on Money Train
Money Train is yet another top drawer slot to add to the Wild West division. I couldn’t honestly say that I believe it will attract the type of adoration reserved for Dead or Alive 2, but that would be an especially hard act to follow.
It’s a good looking game for sure, and with up to 20,000x the stake on offer it certainly has potential. Lots of potential. The base game can drag a bit while you’re waiting for the bonus round, but with all symbols including wilds stacked you will bring it some surprisingly big wins every now and again. But who are we kidding? Like many highly volatile games, it’s all about the Bonus Round. And a very unique and often engrossing bonus round it is. You may only start with 3 spins, but on a good bonus you’ll be spinning for a very long time. The bonus symbols also offer a flutter of excitement whenever they land, especially the persistent ones. Also, the addition of extra reels via ‘The Widener’ during the bonus game creates more chances to keep on spinning.
I like what Relax have done here, they’ve put some original thought into a game which is up against some of the best recent slots in the business. This is a bold move and one which, I think, pays off. I’m also a sucker for a buy-a-bonus option. Sure, it’s a gamble – but then so is playing a highly volatile slot and potentially spending a LOT more than 80x your stake to reach the bonus round. And let’s face it that is really the aim of this game. With Temple Tumble Megaways™, Ignite the Night, and now Money Train all coming out of Relax’s studios in recent months, we’re excited to see what they come up with next.
