Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 Slot
We’re heading back to May of 2012 to take a quick look over Magic Mirror Deluxe 2, the most successful slot in many territories for German land-based and online provider, Merkur.
Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 adopts a fantasy theme featuring castles, princesses, and unicorns but most of all it features all the mechanics, features, and volatility of Novomatic’s Book of Ra – the most cloned online slot of all time.
A highly volatile slot with a very rewarding free spins round, this game plays on a 5x3 reel set with 10 fixed pay lines and a published RTP of 95.63%. Try it not at a participating casino from €0.10 up to €100 per spin.
Design and Symbols
It’s pretty safe to say that Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 probably wasn’t in line for any design awards. It may have been created some time ago but the graphics and artwork look more like 1986 than 2012. They may appeal to a few old sentimental fools who remember playing the original Dungeons & Dragons arcade game a quarter of a century ago, but in the 21st century, this level of rudimentary design is not quite what we’re used to. The game board covers the majority of the screen, has a thin frame of gold, and the symbols sit on top of a pitch black background inside the frame. The back drop to the game board shows a grassy hill with a crop of evergreens to the top right and a royal castle with a towering turret to the top left.
The low-value symbols are represented by the standard card values 10, J, Q, K, and A with the more rewarding symbols taking the form of a ring, a shield, a unicorn, and a princess. The princess is the highest value symbol on the board with 5 on a pay line returning 500x the bet size. As per every other “Book” clone, the wild is also the scatter, and on this occasion, it is represented by the eponymous Magic Mirror, a gold framed mirror with a golden lion’s head at the top of the mirror frame and two golden lion paws at the base of the frame.
As is the Merkur way you are able to gamble every win in the base game or the bonus game. As it is a ‘Book’ clone, the bonus game in Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 is a free spins round.
Cards & Ladder Gamble Feature
Land any win and you’ll be given the option to each collect your win or to gamble with either the red/black playing card gamble, or the ladder gamble. The card gamble shows a row of face-up playing cards and you must guess whether the next card will be red or black to double your win. You can gamble your win up to €140. The ladder gamble is a simple gamble up a cash ladder which again can go as high as €140. While this is a nice feature it’s kind of irrelevant for the higher stakes players who won’t be able to gamble anything other than the very smallest wins with the €140 limit. There is also an option to collect half your win and gamble the remainder.
Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 Free Spins
Land three or more scatters and you’ll earn 10 free spins. As with any ‘Book’ clone, one of the standard symbols will be chosen as a special expanding symbol which will expand to cover the whole reel if it is included in a winning combo from a free spin. What’s more, unlike any other symbol (other than the scatter) you don’t need the first symbol of the win to be on the left-most reel, and nor do the symbols necessarily have to be on adjacent reels. For example, if the chosen ‘special symbol’ was a King then you could land a King on reels 2, 3, and 5 and this would count as a “three in a row” win. All three rows would then expand and you’d be paid as though you had landed a 3x3 block of Kings. It is possible to retrigger the free spins by landing the scatters once again. If you are able to retrigger then you’ll get to choose another symbol as a special symbol and as such, you’ll have two special symbols active during the 2nd 10 spins giving you even more opportunities to land big wins.
Our Thoughts on Magic Mirror Deluxe 2
I think we can safely say the continued popularity of Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 has very little to do with the archaic visuals and a whole lot to do with it being a (relatively) early Book of Ra clone. High volatility slot lovers tend to favour potential over pizazz and if any slot is more substance over style then it is this one!
You can’t argue with the success of this particular format and it was a canny move on Merkur’s part to get their Book clones out nice and early to cash in. Big risk players will always flock to games which offer this kind of potential
