How to win big in Katmandu Gold – Free Drops
3, 4, 5, or 6 Bonus Scatters trigger 10, 15, 20, or 25 Free Drops. During Free Drops, any bonus scatter landing increases the win multiplier for any subsequent win by 1x.
3 or more Bonus Scatters during Free Drops retriggers the feature.
- Avalanche Mechanic
- Expanding Wins
- Big Symbols
- Ice Climber
- Buy Bonus
Symbols from winning combos explode to be replaced by symbols ‘avalanching’ from above. New wins lead to further avalanches. New wins also add new rows (to a maximum of 9) and each new row results in an exponential increase in the ways to win (from 4,096 to a maximum of 531,441). A non-winning avalanche resets the board to its regular 6x4 format.
Expanding win symbols are regular symbols or wilds with an arrow facing up, down, or both ways. When forming part of a win, expanding win symbols replace all regular symbols in whichever direction their arrow points, to the top or bottom of the reel thus increasing the size of the win.
Big symbols are a regular feature used in Elk’s Gold Series and come in sizes of 2x2, 3x3, and 4x4. All regular symbols and wilds may appear as Big Symbols.
Two Ice Climber symbols (represented by a yin and yang symbol inside a yin and yang symbol) trigger the Ice Climber feature. When triggered, all symbols above (as well as the Ice Climbers symbols themselves) turn to ice before revealing only high value or wild symbols.
Katmandu Gold is the first slot with the Elk Buy Bonus feature (not available in the UK). There are two options: 100x the bet size for a regular free drops entry or 500x the bet size for a Buy Super Bonus which guarantees free drops starting with a 10x win multiplier.
Look and Feel of Katmandu Gold
Katmandu Gold is another great looking slot from Elk. The detail in the Nepalese mountain backdrop is stunning, as is the temple behind the gate which is only visible during the bonus round. The soundtrack is as atmospheric is the artwork, and the changes in perspective as the rows increase and the action pans backwards is as superb as ever. There are 12 regular symbols with Kane as the highest paying, with 6 on a payline worth 5x the bet size. You can see all the symbols and their associated values below (based on a €1 bet).
Katmandu not only looks great, but it also plays great. The abundance of modifiers and features keep the player engaged, and the free drops feature is made all the more entertaining with the addition of the increasing win multiplier. The addition of a bonus buy feature is also worthy of note. However, the Super Buy Bonus costing a staggering 500x the bet size caused a sharp intake of breath! Starting at a 10x win multiplier it really can pay big – but its an awful lot to gamble on a single feature so be very careful as this is still a volatile slot. Still, with a 10,000x win possible, up to a maximum of a staggering €1,000,000 – I’m sure that big old bonus buy will attract some attention.
Katmandu Gold is my pick of the ‘Gold’s’ so far and Elk’s innovations are helping to keep the series fresh.
