How to win big in Jolly Roger 2 – Bonus Quest Feature
The biggest wins are triggered via the Bonus Quest Feature, the feature which grants access to all four of the game’s main features. Red Roger symbols landing on reels 1, 3, and 5 trigger the Bonus Quest Feature. When triggered, 12 scrolls appear on screen, each containing one of the game’s four features. Pick scrolls to reveal features. The first feature to be revealed 3 times is activated. Of the four features, the two Free Spins features are the game’s most profitable.
- Battle Free Spins
- Treasure Hunt Free Spins
You are given 3 lives playing Battle Free Spins, which are played on a 3x3 board which replaces the regular gameboard for the duration of the feature. A ship is spotted through a telescope which is either a Merchant ship or a Privateer ship with which you do battle. There are three Privateer ships (Portuguese, Dutch, British) and one Merchant ship. The battle against a Privateer ship is determined by a spin of the 3x3 board which contains two sets of coins (yours and your adversaries). Whoever lands the most coins wins the battle. Win the battle to earn an extra life and a free spin with a Pirates Victory Reward. Lose the battle and lose a life but the free spin is awarded an Opponents Victory Reward. The rewards come in the form of a reel modifier, all of which are listed below.
- Pirates Victory Reward – Random stacked wild reels and random win multiplier.
- Opponent’s Victory Reward (British)– all high paying symbols upgraded to treasure chests.
- Opponent’s Victory Reward (Portuguese) – up to 2 symbol types turn wild.
- Opponent’s Victory Reward (Dutch) – three adjacent reels display the same symbols.
You always defeat a Merchant ship but do not earn an extra life for this victory. A new ship appears for battle after every reward free spin. The round ends when all lives are lost.
Treasure Hunt Free Spins use the base game board but with the addition of a treasure map symbol, and an actual treasure map laid out beneath the reels. You initially play with 10 free spins. A treasure map symbol moves your ship one place across the map. Move 4 places across the map to open a Treasure Chest. Each chest contains 2 or 3 extra free spins and either win multiplier, symbol upgrades, or wild transformations. There are 7 Treasure Chests to unearth across the map. When all are your opened, your free spins play out using the active modifiers.
- Compass Multipliers
- Instant Win
- Bottle of Rum Free Spin
Available on every spin, the compass in the middle of the game’s logo above the reel might randomly start to glow and award a win multiplier up to 10x. This randomly activated ‘Compass Multiplier’ is able to activate during any spin in the base game or bonus games.
Activated via the Bonus Quest Feature, an Instant Win results in a treasure chest dropping onto the ship’s galley and revealing a cash prize of up to 20x the bet size. Also activated via the Bonus Quest Feature, the Bottle of Rum Free Spin takes place on the regular gameboard but with a potion bottle under each reel. Pick a bottle to reveal a random stacked wild reel. Keep picking until the poison filled bottle is chosen. The free spin is then activated, potentially with the compass multiplier.
Look and Feel of Jolly Roger 2
Jolly Roger 2 is a vast improvement on the original, especially in terms of design, where the two couldn’t be further apart. Nevertheless, this is still not Play’n GO’s most well executed design, which just goes to show how far the industry has come in the last 7-8 years. The action takes place on a pirate galleon, with the gameboard housed in a carved wooden framed towards the stern of the ship. Beyond the pirate ship you can see enemy galleons bobbing in the sea. The reels are translucent so your ship’s cannons can also be seen as you look towards the ship’s bow. The soundtrack is a tense piece of music which heightens the sense of urgency, especially during the battle scenes.
Low pays are the standard royals, 10-A while high paying symbols are represented by stolen pirate loot with the Treasure Chest the highest paying symbol, awarding 10x the bet size for 5 on a payline. See all high and low paying symbols and values below.
Jolly Roger 2 is an enjoyable game with decent potential. One minor gripe I had was that I would have preferred there to have been different scatters for the more rewarding features as hitting those 3 scatters way more often than not ended in the slight disappointment of an instant win or Bottle of Rum free spins. That said, even the Bottle of Rum free spin can bring significant wins if the compass multiplier comes into play. Overall, however, a very satisfying medium volatility game from Play’n GO.
