First Non AvatarUX PopWins Slot
Up to 33,614 Ways to Win
Joker Drop PopWins sees Stakelogic become the first studio to get their hands on AvatarUX’s proprietary PopWins mechanic outside of their original YGS Masters partnership with Yggdrasil.
Having announced their licensing deal in late October, Stakelogic has wasted no time in bringing their first official PopWins offering to the public with Joker Drop. I say ‘official’ as it would appear that AvatarUX is also taking credit for Stakelogic’s July release ‘Mystery Drop’, a game that certainly used the PopWins mechanic, but which is not listed as a PopWins game. One suspects that Stakelogic’s ‘borrowing’ of the mechanic may have had some part in the subsequent licensing agreement, with AvatarUX rightfully claiming a nice licensing fee for the game as part of the deal.
Anyway, back to the matter in hand, what can we expect from Joker Drop. Well, much of the same with popping, expanding reels, free spins with an increasing win multiplier, and a lot of potentials.
Where to play
How to Win Big in Joker Drop PopWins– Free Spins
Expanding all 5 rows to the maximum 7 symbols triggers 5 free spins. Rows are expanded via the PopWins mechanic whereby each time a player spins a winning combination, the winning symbols ‘Pops’ to each create two new symbols.
Before the free spins bonus round begins, you are taken to a pachinko game, the ‘Gamble Drop’ as it is called here. You choose one of three starting positions to drop a ball down the pachinko board, hopefully into one of the 3 winning chambers at the bottom of the board which add more free spins (up to 15 total). Land in one of the 3 non-winning chambers and you sacrifice all your free spins.
Free spins are played with all 5 reels at their maximum height of 7 symbols. As such there are no further expanding of the reels. However, winning combos still ‘pop’ and are replaced with new symbols which could trigger a new winning combo.
Free spins start with a win multiplier of 3x. The win multiplier increases by 1x with each winning combo to appear.
During free spins a joker wild symbol appears on the middle reel. This does not appear during regular play in the base game.
As there was in Mystery Drop, there is an option in Joker Drop to play with a ‘Super Stake’. Playing the Super Stake doubles the cost of a base game spin but has the advantage of allowing retriggers during the free spins bonus round, should you get there.
- Up to 33,614 Ways to Win
- Diamond Meter
- Coin Meter
- Bonus Buy
Joker Drop PopWins pays both ways and operates a win mechanic which pays 3 or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting at either the leftmost or rightmost reel. Starting on a 5x4 board with 2,048 ways to win, the PopWins mechanic increases the ways to win each time a winning combo lands. As previously mentioned, it does this by creating 2 new symbols to replace each of the symbols in the winning combo. The reels stop expanding at 7 symbols high, at which point there are 33,514 ways to win.
The Diamond and Coin meters can be seen to the left of the reel set in the base game. During regular small coin or diamond symbols are attached at random to regular symbols. At the end of the spin these small symbols shoot over to their respective meters. It takes 5 symbols to fill the meters. The meters reset after a losing spin.
Fill the Diamond meter and 5 joker wild symbols replace 5 symbols on reels 2, 3, and 4. Once any winnings are collected the meter resets. Fill the Coin meter and the 5 coins replace 5 symbols on the reels and each reveals a cash prize.
Players in participating jurisdictions also have the opportunity to buy straight into the free spins bonus round. The cost is 80x the bet size, or 120x the bet size using the Super Stake feature.
Look and Feel of Joker Drop Pop Wins
Although there is nothing spectacular about the look and feel of Joker Drop PopWins, Stakelogic are renowned for their classic fruity games, especially ones featuring jokers, so there is something comfortingly familiar about the design. It uses the standard ‘casino purple’ for the reels, with the game board housed within an almost 50’s jukebox type border. The symbols are all standard card values and fruits, but they’re crisp and clean, and the PopWins ‘pop’ nicely on what is an overall aesthetically pleasing set up.
Low value symbols are the royals 10-A. The higher value symbols are all fruits but for the red 7 which is the highest value of all, paying 5x the bet size for 5 on adjacent reels. See below for the full paytable (based on a €1 bet).
While Stakelogic certainly haven’t gone to town on either the design or the features Joker Drop is eminently playable. The high volatility provides excitement, and the bonus round often pays handsomely. I’m not sure about using the Super Stake during the base game as it seems to provide little extra value for a lot of extra cash. However, if you’re a Bonus Buy fan then using it is a no-brainer. For only 50% more than the regular price, the opportunity to retrigger can be incredibly lucrative as that win multiplier begins to grow. With wins of over 20,000x the bet size possible, the free spins bonus round is an exciting place to be with retriggers a real possibility.
Overall, as their first ‘genuine’ PopWins release, Stakelogic have come up with a simple yet attractive and effective proposition.
