Design & Symbols
The design is typical of an up to date Book Clone and very nicely done. The action takes place on another sunny day in the Egyptian desert. An animated red and the purple cloudy sky rolls along the top of the screen, beneath which Pyramids are visible in the distance. Closer to the action a sparkling stream separates the gameboard with the rest of the scene. Either side of the gameboard stands ornate pillars inscribed with hieroglyphics up their length. The board itself sits on the sand and is framed with a typical red and white piped border, a border which also separates the 5 reels. The reels are back in dark blue parchment covered in Egyptian symbols. A rather incongruous assortment of beeps and bleeps accompany base gameplay. This changes, however, during free spins when the usual, authentic Arabian style soundtrack takes over. During free spins, the scene changes to the inside of King Tut’s tomb. The chamber is littered with gold coins, with fire bowls on raised pillars illuminating proceedings. The blue parchment from the base game reels is replaced with a more earthy, dog-eared sandy parchment. Low value symbols are the standard royals 10-A. High value symbols are a scarab, a golden Bastet, King Tut, and John Hunter. John Hunter is the highest paying symbol, awarding 500x the bet size for 5 on a payline. Doubling up as the wild and scatter is the Book of Tut itself.

Free Spins with Expanding Symbols
3 or more scatters trigger 10 free spins. Landing 3 or more scatters during the bonus round retriggers 10 more free spins and there is no limit to the number of retriggers. Prior to free spins starting one of the game’s symbols is selected randomly to become a special expanding symbol. When this symbol lands anywhere on the board, and it can facilitate a win, it will expand to cover the entire reel. Expanding symbol wins do not have to consist of adjacent symbols. For example, if expanding symbols land on reels 1, 3, and 5 the game pays as if the expanded rows were next to one another. Also, expanded symbol wins do not need to start from the leftmost reel unlike standard wins. Any additional free spins awarded retain the same expanding symbol.

The Buy-a-bonus feature is available in most jurisdiction (with the notable exception of the UK). It costs 100x the bet size to bypass the base game and go straight to the free spins bonus round.
Our Thoughts on John Hunter and the Book of Tut
It seemed inevitable that John Hunter would, sooner or later, find himself with a magic book helping him reap the rewards from a Pharaoh’s tomb. Despite being as straight up a Book clone as you can imagine, the classy design and tried-and-tested ‘Book’ formula makes for an above-average slot experience. Change the slot landscape Book of Tut will not but provide Pragmatic Play with decent returns it almost certainly will.
