One of two base game features, Genie Lamp is a randomly activated bonus. When triggered, reels 2 and 4 fill with full reel wild symbols. Not only that, but for this spin the paylines pay both ways.
The second base game feature, Genie Wishes, is triggered when Aladdin lands to the left of the Lamp symbol. All Aladdin and Lamp symbols turn wild and all paying symbols are given a random win multiplier value of x2, x3, x4, x5, or x10.
3 or more Genie symbols trigger Genie Parade, Golden Genie’s free spins round. There is no set number of free spins, rather the Genies on the screen act as ‘Walking Wilds’. Using the popular mechanic previously used by Nolimit City in April’s Harlequin Carnival, all Genies ‘walk’ one reel to the left with each spin until they walk off of the far left side of the gameboard. While spins are ongoing, new Genies may land which also ‘walk’ one reel to the left during each spin. The Genie Parade only ends after the final Genie has walked off the board, and no new Genie lands on the following spin.
In Golden Genie the Genie acts not only as the scatter symbol, but also as the game’s wild symbol. As such the continued appearance of several wilds during each spin means there are always opportunities for winning combos. Furthermore, the addition of win multipliers on every spin increases the value of those winning combos.
At the start of the Parade, one of the Genies is chosen as the ‘Golden Genie’. The Golden Genie is awarded a win multiplier with every spin and during each spin he dishes out the same win multiplier to all other Genies in his wake. The Golden Genie’s total win multiplier is added to the Genie closest to him when he leaves the gameboard. That Genie now becomes the Golden Genie. Win multipliers continue to be added as the Genies continue their parade across the board, and the Golden Genie continues to add their total win multipliers to the Genie closest to them (which then picks up the mantle of Golden Genie) when it is time for them to leave the board.
The Genie Wishes feature might also trigger during the Genie Parade but rather than merely any Aladdin and Lamp symbols into wilds, they transform into Genies and join the Parade.
Depending on which jurisdiction you are playing from, there is a Bonus Buy button which allows players to go straight into the Genie Parade feature at a cost of 80x the chosen stake.
Design & Symbols
Simple but effective is how I’d describe the design of Golden Genie. The background shows the sky on a starry night, viewed through the entrance of an Arabian Palace. The background is static but for wispy clouds which continually float silently across the sky in both directions. The gameboard has an ornate wood and gold frame, with the symbols on blue reels. An ominous soundtrack accompanies play.
Low value symbols are the standard royal playing card values 10-A. High value symbols are a Leopard, a Cobra, the Golden Lamp, Aladdin, and the Princess. The Princess is the highest value regular symbol, awarding 25x the bet size for a full payline. The Genie acts as both the scatter and the wild and pays the same as the Princess for a full payline.
Our Thoughts on Golden Genie & the Walking Wilds
Golden Genie & the Walking Wilds is another great slot from Nolimit City. Perhaps not quite as punchy as Punk Rocker, this Arabian adventure still has plenty of bites, as well as the ability to deliver the kind of rewards you’d expect from a wish granted by the Genie of the Lamp. Scoring 9/10 on Nolimit City’s volatility meter, you might have to wait a while to reap those rewards, but the occasional appearance of a base game feature offers some respite from the sometimes lengthy wait for the Genie Parade. The Genie
Parade itself can disappoint, but then again it can also deliver in spades. Get a few of those Genies up and running and you could be looking at a real sack of treasure – especially if you trigger Genie Wishes during the bonus round.
Having started the second half of 2020 well, I look forward to what Nolimit City have got in store for us for the rest of the year.
