African Quest is Triple Edge Studios 15th slot release on behalf of gaming giant Microgaming and for their first release of 2020, they’ve plumped an African Savannah themed slot. But will this quest bring home the bacon? Or will it just be a wild boar? (sic)
This slot plays off a 5x4 reel set with 1,024 ways to win, awarding wins for 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel. It’s a highly volatile slot with a max win of up to 5,600x the bet in a spin. The biggest wins are likely to come from a scatter triggered free spins bonus round with a number of spins and wild multipliers options.
African Quest also benefits from Microgaming’s Hyperspins feature whereby players can pay to respin a particular reel if they believe it might benefit them. Book of Oz is a good example of a slot utilising the Hyperspins mechanic.
You can play African Quest from €0.10 to €15 a spin and comes with an RTP of 96.52%.
Design & Symbols
Ask the average online slot player what they think the visuals of a slot named “African Quest” might look like and the chances are they would describe something like what Triple Edge has come up with here. It’s not that they’ve done a bad job at all, it’s just that African Quest looks like any number of Savannah themed slots already on the market. The background shows the African Plains near sunset with a hazy sky in shades of yellow and orange. The dry scrub to the front of the screen sways gently in the breeze. and silhouettes of acacia trees can be seen in the mid-distance. A lone giraffe can be seen grazing to the left of the screen while birds fly overhead. The gameboard sits front and centre with symbols on sand coloured reels and framed with a red and yellow patterned border.
Low-value symbols are the playing card values 9-A. High-value symbols are Zebras, Giraffes, Rhinos, Elephants, and Lions. The Lions also come stacked and are the highest paying symbol with 5 on a payline awarding 7.5x the bet. The scatter, a golden coin featuring the African continent, is the highest value symbol of all, awarding 20x the bet size for 5 on a payline. The wild is a landscape image of the savanna and appears on reels 2, 3, and 4 only.
- Free Spins with Wild Multipliers
At the end of every base game spin you can, if you choose to pay the associated price, respin any of the reels. You can respin any reel (one at a time) as often as you like although each respin will cost you. The amount of money each spin costs is shown at the bottom of each reel and is linked to how valuable a respin may potentially be. For example, if you have two scatter symbols on the reels already the cost to respin a reel is going to be comparatively high considering the value of the potential reward. Similarly, spinning a reel when the other 4 contain (for example) stacked Lions is likely to be very expensive. Even when a Hyperspin brings in a when you have the option to respin again to try to bag another win. Note, however, that only wins which include the Hyperspun reel are paid.
Free Spins with Wild Multipliers
Landing 3 or more scatters triggers free spins. There are 3 levels of free spins and then 3 choices of free spins per level. The level you play depends on how many scatters you landed to trigger the free spins, 3, 4, or 5. The available choices per level are shown below
12 free spins with 1x-2x wild multipliers
Or 8 free spins with 2x-3x wild multipliers
Or 5 free spins with 3x-4x wild multipliers
25 free spins with 1x-2x wild multipliers
Or 15 free spins with 2x-3x wild multipliers
Or 10 free spins with 3x-4x wild multipliers
40 free spins with 1x-2x wild multipliers
Or 20 free spins with 2x-3x wild multipliers
Or 15 free spins with 3x-4x wild multipliers
Landing 2 or more scatters during free spins adds more spins. Landing 2 scatters during free spins adds either 3, 5, or 6 extra spins depending on which level you started. Landing 3-5 scatters adds the number of free spins associated with the level you are playing.
When more than one multiplier wild lands during free spins and both feature in the same win then the multipliers are multiplied together. This gives a maximum possible win multiplier of 64x when three 4x wild multipliers combine in the same winning combo.
Our Thoughts on African Quest
For an average looking game in a crowded theme-space, I found myself surprisingly drawn in by African Quest. The gambler in me kind of likes the Hyperspins mechanic, although it can be costly if you’re a little low on self-control. Furthermore, I always favour free spins rounds in which you are able to control the volatility a little. I find this helps the game appeal to a broader audience. I was also pleasantly surprised at how often free spins were retriggered during my tenure at the controls. That said, getting to the free spins in the first place could be a tedious affair, and the base game wins (on the whole) were quite disappointing. Nevertheless, this is a solid effort from Triple Edge Studios, if a little on the formulaic side.
