Design & Symbols
For an epic slot, you would expect to find an epic setting, and they don’t get much more epic than Zeus’s Olympic Temple atop Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the Greek Gods. Other Greek temples and pantheons are visible on parts of the mountain behind Zeus’s temple. Above Mount Olympus, the dark and brooding clouds are occasionally lit by lightning following a distant rumble of thunder. The gameboard sits in the middle of the temple, in front of a large, elaborate golden wheel, with the stone pillars of the temple in the foreground either side of the reel set. The fast-paced, the heroic soundtrack is occasionally interrupted by thunder and lightning bolts which rip down the reels during play.
Low-value symbols are card suits, clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades. High-value symbols are masks of serpents, birds, bears, bulls, and Pan, the God of the wild, shepherds and flocks. Pan, being the most valuable pays 150x the stake for a full payline. The Free Spins symbol is the scatter. Zeus himself is the wild and he appears as a 3x1 sized symbol.

The Expanding Lightning feature is present in both the base and bonus games. Whenever Zeus lands fully on the reels he triggers the Expanding Lightning feature. After any regular wins are paid Zeus rises out of his 1x3 symbol and fires a thunderbolt up into the heavens. The thunderbolt zaps back down onto one or more reels, covering any reels on which it lands in the same randomly chosen regular symbols. It is possible to cover the entire board in the same symbol from an Expanding Lightning spin. Also, the expanded reels pay along with any paylines, regardless of where they land on the board – much the same as in the Book of Ra (or any of its many clones). For example, if Zeus’s thunderbolt rained down on reels 2, 4, and 6, these would count the same as reels 1, 2, and 3 all being covered with the same symbol.
3 scatters activates 8 free spins. Upon activation, the board temporarily disappears to reveal the Royal Wheel where you can gamble for more spins. Win, and the 8 spins could become 12, or even 20. Lose, and spins are reduced to 4. As long as you keep winning, you can gamble up to three times. Hit the highest number on each gamble for 40 free spins.
During free spins, the number of 1x3 Zeus wilds on the reels increases from 1 to 3 meaning it is possible for 3 Lightning Features to activate on the same spin. If more than 1 lands then the first acts as normal, the second either adds more reels of the same symbol, more reels filled with a different regular symbol, or it can strike the same reels as the first bolt which upgrades the symbols to the next highest paying. If 3 Zeus’s land, then the 3rd acts the same as the second.
Our Thoughts on Zeus Lightning Power Reels
This slot may not be overflowing with features, but it still packs a mighty punch and is mightily entertaining. The Lightning Feature, especially during the free spins round is very addictive and can spring some big wins. It is also triggered with surprising regularity in the base game. This helps as it is often a long, drawn-out affair to reach the bonus round.
With wins of over 4,500x up for grabs the potential is also decent, although a minor quibble is that perhaps to make it even more enticing, some of that base game generosity might have been better employed being stacked onto the top end. If this were the case, I’m sure Zeus Lightning would become very popular among the hardcore variance fans. That being said, there is certainly no harm playing it ever so slightly safer (I say ever so slightly as this is still fiercely volatile) to attract a broader customer base.
Another good effort from Red Tiger, who are already proving their worth to their new parent company, NetEnt.
