Temple Stacks Slot

Temple Stacks, released on 30th of January is Yggdrasil’s first video slot release of 2020, and it is something of a game-changer for the Swedish provider. Featuring their new ‘Splitz’ expanding symbol technology, Temple Stacks is an Aztec-themed slot offering up to 248,832 ways to pay.

The pay ways start at 243 on a standard 5x3 reel set but via the Splitz mechanic the set-up change to a 5x9 symbol board in the base game and a 5x12 symbol board in the bonus game. With a 25,000x maximum payout, this is Yggdrasil’s biggest paying slot without a progressive jackpot. Temple Stacks volatility is sold as Medium/High and the slot comes with an industry-standard RTP of 96.1%

With the ability to produce 248,832x wins, it is the free spins bonus round where the biggest wins are going to emerge. A sticky wild respin feature in the base game is also capable of delivering some nice wins while you wait for those free spins to trigger.

You can play Temple Stacks from €0.10 to €100 per spin in at participating casinos.

Design & Symbols

Yggdrasil is famed for their high definition designs and terrific detailing in their artwork, and while I’d say that there is no shoddy work from the art team on display here, Temple Stacks is among the least artistically innovative of the developer’s slots. None of this really matters, however, as the artwork is still decent, and there are only so many ways to present a cartoon Aztec Temple anyway – and we’ve seen them all before many times.

The entrance to an ancient Aztec temple serves as the gameboard which is framed by stone pillars with tribal carvings. The board sits on a stone plinth accessible by a stone staircase either side of the Temple entrance. The background is a standard out of focus Aztec or Mayan jungle with plenty of trees and greenery to be observed.

On the board, the 5 low-value symbols are of Aztec carvings including fish, snakes, eagles, and lizards. The high-value symbols are blue, green, purple, orange, and red gems. The red gem is the most valuable with 5 adjacent symbols paying 2.5x the bet size. There is also a hybrid free spin/wild symbol that resembles an armoured shield. Finally, there is the Splitz Mystery Stack symbol which covers whichever reel upon which it lands which consists of a repeated gold design on a blue background.

Special Features

  • Splitz Mystery Stacks
  • Sticky Wilds with Respin
  • Multi-level Free Spins Round

Splitz Mystery Stacks

At the end of any base game spin in which a Splitz Mystery Stack has landed, the stack will transform into between 3 and 9 identical regular symbols. The maximum number of symbols a Mystery Stack can reveal during the free spins bonus round can increase to 12.

Sticky Wilds with Respin

2 free spins scatter landing converts the symbols to free spin/wild hybrid symbols which trigger a respin with the scatter/wilds remaining in place as sticky scatter/wilds.

Multi-level Free Spins Round

3 or more scatters trigger the free spins bonus round. The first time in a session free spins is triggered the Splitz Mystery Stacks symbols still offer up between 3-9 identical regular symbols. This is called the ‘Steel Level’ of free spins. 3, 4, or 5 scatters award 15, 20, or 35 free spins at the Steel Level. On each of the next 3 occasions that free spins are triggered the level increases, firstly to Bronze, then Silver, and finally Gold. The Spiltz Mystery Symbol increases its maximum number of transformed symbols with each new level. Conversely, the number of free spins awarded declines with each new level achieved.

Splitz Mystery Stack Symbols

Once you have moved up to a specific level you can choose to play your free spins at the new level or at any of the lower levels. Your decision will depend on whether or not you are willing to sacrifice free spins for higher-yielding Splitz Mystery Stacks. Playing at the highest level (Gold) awards the least spins but the most potential, and it is here where the max 248,832 ways to win is possible.

3 or more scatters during free spins retriggers the bonus round.

Our Thoughts on Temple Stacks

Temple Stacks is a highly enjoyable game from Yggdrasil. It’s clear they didn’t want to be left behind after the continuing success of the Megaways slots but rather than bending the knee to Big Time Gaming and buy a license, the devised their own reel mechanic to deliver huge, multi-ways win instead. The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed the similarity between the Splitz mechanic and Nolimit City’s xWays solution. However, while xWays offers to increase the maximum reel size to 6 symbols, Splitz is rather more audacious, ramping the max up to 12.

The sticky wild/scatter respin is also a novel way of combining a sticky wild feature with a heartstopper second chance to trigger the free spins bonus round. Also, the multi-level free spins round rewards loyalty by offering those who stick around a chance to move up the levels. Furthermore, the fact that you can choose your level (once you’ve achieved them) allows you to choose your volatility.

Although this isn’t Yggdrasil/s prettiest slot, what it lacks in beauty it makes up for in brawn.
