Play North Storm on
Working alongside Microgaming, Austrian software developer Rabcat, release North Storm, a wintry looking slot with a Norse Mythology theme on 5th December 2019.
This is a medium variance slot with 25 paylines played on a 5x3 reel set using Microgaming’s Rolling Reels™ mechanic.
Increasing win multipliers working in combination with the Bonus Falls mechanic are capable of producing some big wins, especially in the free spins round where the win multipliers are all doubled.
With wins of up to 20,000x the stake theoretically possible, this might be a game worth giving a try when it is released in early December. You’ll be able to play North Storm from just €0.25 up to €50 per spin.

Design & Symbols
The harsh wintry scene which unfolds paints a picture of an unforgiving landscape with a blizzard blowing across the many snow-covered rocky outcrops. To the left of the gameboard stands a fierce looking statue of a Norse Warrior holding a Thor-like hammer. To the right of the reels is another stone statue of a warrior holding a long sword. Blue and grey stones make up the reels, with symbols carved into the rock faces of each stone. The reels spin to the sound of fierce winds, eerie howls, and an ominous percussive beat.
Low value symbols are the card values 10-A, all carved in stone. High value symbols are bronze, silver, and gold symbols from Norse Mythology. The most valuable gold symbol pays 100x the bet size for 5 along a payline. The wild is a wolf mask which also pays 100x the bet size for 5 along a payline. There is no scatter symbol but there is a free spins symbol which takes the form of the mask worn by the aforementioned statue – only this one has blue light shining from its eyes. The free spins symbol only appears on reels 1, 2, and 3.

- Bonus Fall
Bonus Falls known by other providers as; Rolling Reels, Avalanche Reels, Cascading Reels, Tumbling Reels etc work by removing winning combinations from the reels and replacing them with symbols falling from directly above to potentially create new winning combinations. New winning combinations formed after a Bonus Falls action repeat the process. The process continues until no new winning combination occurs.
With each consecutive winning combination, a win multiplier is added up to a maximum of 4x in the base game. The win multipliers are doubled in the free spins bonus game.
3 adjacent symbols on a payline award 8 free spins. Any further combinations of 3 adjacent free spin symbols which occur during this fall or any subsequent bonus falls for the same spin add 2 more free spins each. The maximum number of free spins is 20 and no new free spins are available to be earned once free spins start. During the free spins the win multiplier feature is doubled; the first consecutive win adds a 2x multiplier, the next 4x, then 6x, then 8x for all consecutive wins thereafter.
Our Thoughts on North Storm
North Storm is a good-looking game with a solid if well-worn feature. For a medium variance slot, it certainly provides plenty of excitement and with this particular mechanic is one of the more forgiving ‘cascade’ games in terms of hit rate.
However, it’s difficult to review this slot without making mention of the games from which its icy façade was hewn. As previously mentioned, plenty of slots employ a similar reel mechanic, and North Storm is very similar to any inspired by NetEnt’s original Avalanche Reels slot, Gonzo’s Quest. It's not quite as much as a copy as Microgaming’s Jungle Jim El Dorado (for example) in terms of theme, but the carved stone reel set is very Gonzo’s Quest. As are the win multipliers which also increase during free spins. Furthermore, just like Gonzo, free spins are triggered by symbols correctly positioned on a payline rather than by scatter symbols.
Having said that, as a new slot with a very different theme there is no reason why this slot can’t survive the winter and earn a few fans along the way.
