Medusa’s Golden Gaze
Released in December 2018, Medusa’s Golden Gaze has a theme based on Ancient Greek mythology, specifically on Medusa, a Gorgon generally described as a winged human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Legend has it that “those who gazed upon her face turned to stone.”
Medusa’s Golden Gaze is played on a 5x3 reel set with 25 fixed pay lines, is of medium volatility and comes with a published RTP of 96.062%. The game comes with a couple of reel modifiers and a free spins round with multiple options depending on how many spins you earn. You can play this game at participating casinos from €0.25 to €25 per spin.
Design and Symbols
The background design in Medusa’s Golden Gaze shows Greek ruins and buildings cast in the hazy glow of the late afternoon sun. The game board is front and centre and is framed between two pillars of what appears to have once been a temple. Medusa herself stands the left of the game board casting an eye on proceedings while an epic theatrical soundtrack plays while you spin.
The low value symbols are the standard royals J, Q, K, and A followed by golden bracelets, helmets and shield, with the highest value symbols are of a mermaid, Perseus (who in Greek mythology cut Medusa’s head off) and Medusa herself as the highest paying regular symbol all with five on a pay line rewarding 8x the bet size. The wild is the game’s logo which substitutes for all other symbols except the scatter and pays even higher with 5 of a kind worth 10x the bet size. The scatter symbol is of a golden temple which once again pays 10x the bet size for 5 on a pay line. All symbols can appear stacked on all reels.
Medusa’s Golden Gaze has a couple of base game features including stacked mystery symbols and a reel copy feature. The bonus game is a free spin feature with multiple options where you can trade spins for multipliers or additional rows.
Each reel contains a stack of mystery positions which are replaced by a game symbol during each reel spin. All symbols including wild and scatter symbols can be mystery stacked.
If any symbol lands fully stacked on reel one then the reel copy feature will be triggered which will result in any number of the other reels also landing a full stack of the same symbol which can result in a full board of identical symbols.
To trigger free spins you must land at least 3 scatters on the same row. 3 scatters award 5 spins, 4 awards 6 spins and 5 scatters on a row awards 8 free spins. As the temple scatters appear stacked on the reels it is possible to earn way more free spins as different combos of scatters award different amounts of spins. If you manage to land a full board of symbols (which can happen with the reel copy feature) you’ll be given a huge 200 free spins. If you win 10 or more free spins you are able to alter the way the spins work for you by choosing one of the following options:
- Regular Free Spins – play the number of spins you’ve won.
- Easy Feature Free Spins – Half of your spins will be played with a higher frequency of landing the Reel Copy feature. The remaining spins are played as regular free spins.
- 50 Lines Free Spins – You can choose to play on 50% of the spins you have won but with 50 pay lines rather than 25.
If you win 30 or more free spins you will be eligible to choose any of the free spin games above but will also be given the opportunity to select the following two options:
- Super Free Spins – Only play with 1/3 of the spins awarded but with a 3x multiplier in effect throughout
- Mega Free Spins – Only play with 1/5 of the spins awarded but with a 5x multiplier in effect throughout
Our Thoughts on Medusa’s Golden Gaze
Medusa’s Golden Gaze is an impressive release from the Chicago based provider. This is not the first Medusa-based slot but it is certainly one of the best. While the graphics are passable rather than exceptional the game play more than makes up for any aesthetic let downs. The reel copy feature is surprisingly profitable for a base game feature and the free spin opportunities are exceptional and you can tweak your tactics to play what you think is the most profitable line. Perhaps it would have been nice to see the volatility a little bit higher to attract the serious players but judging this as a slot for the whole marketplace we give Medusa’s Golden Gaze a solid thumbs up.
