Where to play
- Bonus Respin
- Free Spins
- Reel Respin Feature
- Epic Xtra Stax
- Animal Jackpots
At least 5 bonus symbols are required to trigger Free Spins. Land 4 bonus symbols and a respin is awarded during which the 4 bonus symbols lock in place. The Bonus Respin gives you an additional opportunity to trigger the Free Spins bonus round. As long as new scatters land the respins continue.
5-12 bonus symbols trigger free spin. The number of spins awarded depends on the number of bonus symbols on the board when the bonus is triggered.
- 5 Scatters = 7 Free Spins
- 6 Scatters = 8 Free Spins
- 7 Scatters = 10 Free Spins
- 8 Scatters = 11 Free Spins
- 9 Scatters = 12 Free Spins
- 10 Scatters = 15 Free Spins
- 11 Scatters = 18 Free Spins
- 12 Scatter = 20 Free Spins
This feature is only available during Free Spins. If reel one lands a full stack of matching animal symbols it locks in place (along with any wilds also on the reels) and a respin is awarded. As with the Bonus Respin, Reel Respins continue as long as either another matching symbol or a wild lands on the reels.
Epic Xtra Stax
Epic Xtra Stax is full reels of randomly selected matching symbols which can appear on the reels at any time. This feature plays in both the base and bonus games.
A full board of matching animal symbols awards one of the five progressive Animal Jackpots.
- Eagle Jackpot starts at: 1500x total stake
- Grizzly Jackpot starts at: 500x total stake
- Bison Jackpot starts at: 200x total stake
- Mustang Jackpot starts at: 75x total stake
- Cougar Jackpot starts at: 75x total stake
Design & Symbols
Although the design is fairly similar to what we’ve come to expect from a slot with this theme, I would argue that it is done slightly better than most. There are elements of the generic, tired design often employed by Pragmatic Play (see Bronco Sprit or Wolf Gold) at work here, but the artwork, on the whole, is far grander and much more of a visual feast.
The background image depicts a beautiful landscape with high, rocky outcrops leading down to a small shimmering lake pool beside a small green clearing. The mist rolls through the higher parts of the outcrops while rays of light break through the crowds onto the lower reaches of the scene. Huge evergreens in the foreground flank either side of the reel set.
Although there is no moving animation, it is visually appealing in the same way as a Bob Ross painting. The gameboard is framed in wood with a panel to the left showing the state of the 5 progressive jackpots. A pair of carved eagle wins float just above the reel set with a triangular American flag draped over them.
The game’s logo stands proudly in front of the star-spangled banner. The reels are blue and contain symbols of letters and animals native to the American Plains. The gameplay is accompanied by an upbeat marching band tune – very U.S of A.
Low value symbols are the royal playing card values 10-A. Medium value symbols are the Cougar, Mustang, and Bison. High value symbols are the Grizzly Bear and the Bald Eagle. The Bald Eagle is the highest paying symbol, awarding 10x the bet size for 5 on a payline. The Wild is the American flag, and the bonus symbol is a silhouette of a wolf howling atop a mountain. The bonus symbol only appears on reels 3, 4, and 5. All symbols can come stacked on the reels.
In the image displayed above and below you will find the different paylines in which you can create winning combinations along.
Our Thoughts on Great American Wilds
Great American Wilds really is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it has decent features, is fairly engaging, has a high hit rate, and it looks good. On the other hand, the wins (broadly speaking) are fairly low, as is the maximum win – especially for a moderately volatile game.
This is the game’s major flaw as far as I’m concerned; if you pair a high hit rate with medium/high variance you might get a lot of wins, but most of them are going to be tiny. The RTP is also low, although anyone willing to play a game with progressive jackpots will usually accept this, and over 95% for a prog jackpot slot is decent. I would rate this as an average slot which could be better.
*the max win will often be higher when the highest progressive jackpot is in play. However, if it has recently been won it will be set at a minimum of 1,500x
