- Four New Progressive Jackpots
- Free Spins With Unlimited Win Multipliers
- Up to 117,649 Ways to Win
Big Time Gaming first brought us Bonanza Megaways back in 2016 and it has been their most successful slot release ever since. Even though it wasn’t their first Megaways slot (that honor goes to Dragon Born, released earlier the same year), it has been the most enduring and beloved. Furthermore, it was the first to showcase the hugely popular free spins with increasing win multipliers. Perhaps, then, it comes as no surprise that BTG has picked this iconic slot to be the first to benefit from their new ‘Megapays’ feature.
For those of you familiar with the original Bonanza Megaways, it's probably worth skipping to the next section because other than the Megapays feature, this is for all intents and purposes the same game. Set in the rockface of a Wild West goldmine, Bonanza Megapays uses a classic 6 reel, 117,649 Megaways mechanic offering reaction wins and free spins with an increasing win multiplier. What is new is the inclusion of the aforementioned ‘Megapays’ feature which consists of a symbol collection game with 4 progressive jackpots up for grabs.
How to win big in Bonanza Megapays – Megapays Feature
The Megapays feature is randomly triggered during any spin and its arrival is heralded by the famous BTG bell which rings to signal a big win. The action switches from the gold-rush era gold mine to the bright lights of what appears to be a Vegas-style hotel and casino, although the lush vegetation on either side of the hotel would suggest a more tropical location. The gameboard locks into the maximum 117,649 Megaways with all 6 rows showing 7 symbols. The progressive jackpot meters for the 4 jackpots (Mini, Midi, Major, and Mega) are shown to the right of the reels. A progress bar runs up the left-hand side of the board and passes through the three smaller jackpot symbols in order of size, with the Mega Jackpot at the peak of the progress bar.
Before the reels spin, a symbol between 9 and Ace is chosen at random as your Megapays symbol. When the reels spin, each time your Megapays symbol appears you move one place up the progress bar. Landing a Megapays symbol also guarantees you a respin. 4 Megapays symbols guarantee you the Mini Jackpot and each subsequent 4 Megapays symbol guarantees the next Jackpot on the pay scale. The feature ends when no Megapays symbols land on the reels.
Each jackpot has a minimum guaranteed win known as the jackpot ‘seed’ which is the amount each jackpot resets to after it is won. The amount of Megapays symbols needed to reach each jackpot is as follows. Megapays Symbols Jackpot Seed Amount 4-7 Mini €100 8-11 Midi €1,500 12-14 Major €20,000 15+ Mega €300,000
Of course, these jackpots increase every time a player spins the reels during the base game and the maximum win is not limited. The Megapays feature accounts for 9.44% of the game’s RTP and the contribution to each jackpot from every bet made is Mini = 0.15%, Midi = 0.13% Major = 0.12% Mega = 0.11%.
As tends to be the case with progressive jackpots, the potential winnings remain the same regardless of the level of betting. However, the higher your wager, the more likely you are to trigger the Megapays feature.
- Up to 117,649 Ways to Win
- Cascades with Reaction Wins
- Free Spins With Unlimited Win Multipliers
For those unfamiliar with Megaways slots, the number of pay lines, or in this case ‘Megaways’, changes every spin. During both the base game and the bonus games the 6 reels contain up to 7 symbols, and that number changes on all reels every spin. The maximum number of Megaways in this setup occurs when all 6 reels land 7 symbols on the same spin. 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel constitute a winning combo. As such the highest number of Megaways on offer here is 7x7x7x7x7x7, or 117,649.
In Bonanza Megapays, symbols cascade onto the reels rather than spin. After a win is added to your balance, the winning symbols explode to be replaced by symbols cascading from above. A winning combo caused by this cascade is called a reaction win. Reaction wins continue until no new winning combo is formed, after which the spin ends. The cascades occur during the base game and during free spins.
4 bonus symbols in one spin that spell out the word GOLD trigger the free spins bonus round awards 12 free spins. Any further bonus symbols landed add 5 free spins each to the total number of spins. The cascading symbols with reaction win also play out during the bonus round, only this time with each wins a win multiplier is added.
The multiplier doesn’t reset when the reaction win streak ends. Each subsequent win adds to the win multiplier until the free spins are complete. During the free spins round the Gold scatter symbols only appear on the horizontal track reel above reels 2-5. 3 or 4 scatters landing during free spins adds an additional 5 or 10 free spins, respectively.
Look and Feel of Bonanza Megapays
This part is easy – this looks more or less exactly the same as the original Bonanza Megaways. I say more or less because there are a couple of differences. With regards to the base game and free spins, round everything is the same, only everything is a little more HD. The flora and fauna are lusher and have more detail and there are a couple of new animations which give the scene a little more life. However, if you weren’t aware of Megapays, you probably wouldn’t notice the difference at first glance. Pleasingly, even the banjo soundtrack still accompanies the spins. The other difference, of course, is the swanky hotel/casino scene that accompanies the Megapays feature.
Another aspect of the game which remains the same are the symbols and the paytable. The lows take the form of playing card values 9-A with 4 coloured gems as the highs. Once again, the highest value symbol is the diamond which is worth 50x the bet size for 6 adjacent symbols. See the paytable in full below.
As in the original, the wild is represented by a bundle of dynamite and the 6 standard reels are joined by a 4 symbol horizontal reel on which symbols are deposited on the back on mining carts.
In terms of gameplay and enjoyment, this easily matches the original and as the original was a game-changer, so too might this be, with the addition of the progressive jackpots. Of course, the purse is stretched a little further here with 9.44% of the 9.60% RTP going towards the jackpots. Now, we are aware that many grinders steer clear of progressive jackpot slots for that very reason. However, it isn’t especially noticeable, and putting 9.44% of the RTP towards the jackpots means that they may not be as hard to trigger as some – at least the Mini jackpot, which is still well worth winning.
It’s hard to say a bad word about a game so closely related to one of our favourite ever slots. It is especially hard as the both the volatility and the regular max payout (around 18,000x) have increased. So, I won’t, I’ll just say that anyone who enjoyed the original should enjoy this just as much.
