Design & Symbols
Blueprint has done a good job with the design as usual. It’s nothing too elaborate, just a typical Megaways™ gameboard on a red background with a barely visible diamond pattern of jewels and coins. The gameboard has 6 vertical reels with a horizontal reel above vertical reels 2, 3, 4, and 5. This will be a familiar reel set up for fans of some of Blueprint’s other titles including Diamond Mine, Return of Kong, and Buffalo Rising.
Each reel contains between 2-7 symbols each spin with a maximum of 7 symbols on every reel which would result in 117,649 ways-to-win. The gameboard is framed by a shiny gold riveted frame – much like the ones which surround the golden safes which appear in the game’s logo and scatter symbol.
The background music is an upbeat “chick-a-bow-wow” affair – all choppy guitars and synths.
Low-value symbols are the standard card values 9-A. Higher value symbols are a few old school slot favourites; a white ‘X’ in a red square, the classic black and white BAR symbol, and a red seven. The highest value symbol of all is a diamond on a blue background which pays 50x the bet size for 6 on adjacent symbols.
It’s worth noting this is considerably higher than the next most valuable symbol (red 7) which only pays 5x stake for the same win. The wild is the word ‘Wild’ in gold on a red background with a black circle and the scatter is a golden safe. There is also a mystery symbol, a golden ‘O’ on a red background.
This slot enjoys all the usual Megaways™ suspects when it comes to features including; Cascading Symbols with Reaction Wins, Mystery Symbols, and Free Spins with Unlimited Win Multipliers.
Cascading Symbols with Reaction Wins
After a win lands, the winning symbols disappear to be replaced by symbols cascading from above. Any new win created by this process allows the cycle to repeat. These wins are known as ‘Reaction Wins’ and they continue until no new win is created. At this point, a new spin begins.
Mystery symbols usually land in abundance and all transform to a random regular symbol at the end of a spin. Landing a ton of mystery symbols can lead to a big win. Bar-X’s
Free Spins with Unlimited Win Multipliers
Land 4 or more scatter symbol to trigger free spins. Once triggered, you must pick one of the eight golden safes. Inside each safe is a random number of free spins. The more scatters landed, the higher the possible number of free spins on offer (up to 20 with 4 scatter, up to 35 with 7 scatters). Win an additional 5 or 10 free spins during the bonus round by landing 3 or 4 scatters. During free spins, scatters only appear on the horizontal top row.
The game mechanic during free spins is the same as the base game except that every reaction win adds a win multiplier. The win multiplier does not reset to zero at the end of a reaction win. The multiplier remains at the same level until the next win adds a further win multiplier, and so on.
Bar-X Safecracker Megaways™ Summary
I almost wanted not to enjoy this game as it's more or less a clone of many other Megaways™ slots. However, I just can’t help it – it’s still a great slot to play.
The simple design is nevertheless slick and visually appealing. I also liked the theme and the old school symbols, and the free spins round was as exciting as ever. With a 10,000x max win it doesn’t have quite the potential of the really high variance versions, but it still packs plenty of punch.
Blueprint keeps churning out the Megaways™ slots at a rate of knots which seems somewhat excessive. Mind you, while punters like me are still lapping them up, why not?
