Arthur’s Fortune is a medieval themed slot with focus on the fabled English legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Released by Swedish developer Yggdrasil on May 6th, will this highly volatile slot be remembered as the stuff of legend, or as a historical howler?
Arthur’s Fortune comes with a satisfying stable of features including a randomly activated Wild Conversion feature, a scatter triggered Free Spins round with Scatter WIlds, and Merlin’s Bonus awarding instant cash or Free Spins wins.
This game is played on a 5x4 reel set with 20 paylines and has a default RTP set at 96.2%. Big win seekers will be pleased with the potential on offer, with a hefty max win coming in at 10,856x.
You can play Arthur’s fortune at Yggdrasil casinos from just €0.04 to €100 per spin.
Where to play
- Arthur’s Gold
- Free Spins with Wild Transformations
- Merlin’s Bonus
Arthur’s Gold is a randomly activated feature present in both the base game and during free spins. The semi-circular wooden board above the reels becomes a wheel of fortune containing all the game’s regular symbols. Up to 10 symbols become Wild Conversions for the following spin after being selected by the wheel of fortune. During free spins, converted symbols remain wild for the duration of the round.
Free Spins with Wild Conversions
3 or more Scatter Wilds trigger free spins with converted wilds. The number of spins/conversions vary depending on how many Scatter Wilds land.
- 3 Scatter Wilds award 7 Free Spins and 1 symbol converts to a wild.
- 4 Scatter Wilds award 10 Free Spins and 2 symbols convert to wilds.
- 5 Scatter Wilds award 14 Free Spins and 3 symbols convert to wilds.
Additional free spins and conversions are possible through retriggers. This time only 2 or more Scatter Wilds are necessary to add spins/conversions.
- 2 Scatter Wilds in Free Spins awards 1 Free Spin and 1 Wild Conversion.
- 3 Scatter Wilds in Free Spins awards 2 Free Spins and 2 Wild Conversions.
- 4 Scatter Wilds in Free Spins awards 3 Free Spins and 3 Wild Conversions.
- 5 Scatter Wilds in Free Spins awards 4 Free Spins and 4 Wild Conversions.
As previously noted, all Wild Conversions remain as such throughout the duration of the free spins round.
The magic orb landing on reel 5 triggers Merlin’s Bonus. Merlin appears on screen with his magic orb which awards either a coin win or a number of free spins. Once again, this bonus is available both in the base game and free spins round, although the possible wins differ depending on which round you are playing when the bonus is triggered.
In the base game Merlin’s Bonus awards 2x-25x the stake or 7-14 free spins with up to 3 wild conversions. In free spins Merlin’s Bonus awards 4x-50x or 1-14 free spins but with no wild conversions.
Design & Symbols
Yggdrasil always do a fine job with their artwork, and in this instance create a satisfying fairytale book scene of the castle and court of King Arthur. The scene is somewhat reminiscent of Play’n GO’s surprisingly good 3x3 2019 slot, Queen’s Day Tilt. The castle is set high atop a green hill with scores of medieval tents for his army of warriors in the fields below. Animations include distant clouds passing behind the mountains beyond King Arthur’s castle, the branches and leaves of trees and bushes swaying in the wind, and royal flags flapping on poles above the troops tents. The soundtrack is a typical medieval affair with stringed instruments and a rhythmic drum beat. The gameboard is framed in wood, with a semi-circular board above the reels on which contains the game’s logo in gold.
High value symbols appear as portraits and consist of two dashing knights without armour, Sir Lancelot in full battle attire, Arthur’s bride, Guinevere, and King Arthur himself. Naturally, Arthur is the most valuable regular symbol with 5 on a payline awarding 12.5x the bet size.
Low value symbols are the standard royal playing card values 10-A.
The wild is also the scatter, (called, ingeniously, a Scatter Wild) and is the highest paying symbol of all, paying 27.5x the bet size for a full payline. There is also a Merlin’s Bonus which only appears on reel 5 and is represented by a magical orb.
Our Thoughts on Arthur’s Fortune
Arthur’s Fortune’s is one of the better releases of 2020 so far. The design is on point, the features are engaging and rewarding, and the potential and volatility are enough to attract even the most hardcore of players. While the features are simple and well worn, they all work well together, and are all available in the base and bonus games. Also, with two ways to trigger free spins big wins can come at any time. So, while Arthur’s Fortune is not the most innovative of games, it proves that sometimes just a great maths model, good aesthetics, and a thoughtful deployment of features are all it takes to develop a fine slot.
