Arcane Reel Chaos Slot
NetEnt’s first release of May 2019 entitled Arcane Reel Chaos, is a super-hero themed slot with a selection of base game features and a four-stage free spin round.
Any fans of the former (now discontinued) NetEnt favourite, South Park Reel Chaos should enjoy this game as the gameplay, mechanics and features are more or less identical. NetEnt couldn’t have made it any more obvious –even including the words “Reel Chaos” in the game’s title.
NetEnt has never explained the reason for the South Park version's disappearance back in 2017. Evidently it wasn’t due to a lack of interest. As it was a branded slot, I think we can assume some sort of licensing issue was to blame.
This is a medium/high volatility slot with 20 fixed pay lines operating on a 5x3 reel set. Features including stacked wilds, win multipliers, and winning respins are available in the base game, as well as a lucrative, scatter activated free spins round.
It is possible to win up to 10,000x the stake on Arcane Reel Chaos, and you can play from €0.20 to €100 per spin.
Design and Symbols
Although in terms of gameplay Arcane Reel Chaos is almost identical to the South Park version excepts its design is very different. The cartoon fun of Cartman, Eric, Kenny, and Kyle is swapped for the sinister countenance of the game’s evil protagonist the evil Deep Pockets. The scene behind the game board shows the remains of what appears to be a church turned into rubble. The night time scene reeks of doom as the four superheroes combat Deep Pockets to save the day.
The standard royals 10-A represents the low value symbols. Superheroes Flare, Zero. X, Chrono, and Psyop are the next most valuable. Supervillain Deep Pockets is the most valuable symbol with 5 across a payline awarding 50x the bet-size. There is also a scary looking eye as the scatter symbol which appears on reels 1, 3, and 5. The wild symbol is a large golden ‘W’.
Each of the four superhero characters has their own super-power which manifest as base game features. The main bonus round is a four-stage free spins round.
Base Game Features
Psyop’s Stacked Wilds: During any random base game spin Psyop might shoot into view and trigger the arrival of 2-3 complete reels of stacked wilds.
Zero. X’s Wilds: The appearance of a large Zero. 'X' will initiate the transformation of up to five symbols on the board into wilds
Flare’s Win Multiplier: The presence of Flare after a base game win signifies the start of Flare’s Multiplier. A golden wheel of flames appears on the gameboard which will stop on either a 3x, 4x, or 5x win multiplier.
Chrono’s Respins: When Chrono appears centre-screen after a non-winning spin, he will activate Chrono’s Respins. The reels will respin until a win lands. After each non-winning respin an extra win multiplier is added up to a 10x multiplier. That multiplier will then be applied to the final winning spin.
Arcane Reel Chaos Free Spins
Once again, those familiar with the multi-level free spin battle stage from South Park Reel Chaos will know what to expect. The round is triggered by landing scatters on reels, 1, 3, and 5 simultaneously.
At the outset of the free spins, a random superhero is assigned the task of battling Deep Pockets. Both player and Deep Pockets have health bars at the outset of the battle. When the superhero lands a winning combo containing their own symbol, then Deep Pockets loses a health bar. When the superhero fails to land a win, their health will erode. If the player defeats Deep Pockets, then the bonus game advances to the next level, and an additional win multiplier is added. The cycle repeats through four levels of the free spins round. If a player manages to successfully navigate all four stages of the free spins, then they will be awarded an additional bonus.
Our Thoughts on Arcane Reel Chaos
Let’s be clear, Arcane Reel Chaos is not a new game, it’s a rebooted and redesigned version of South Park Reel Chaos. However, it is a good game, and will no doubt be greeted with open arms by fans of the previous incarnation, as well as picking up some brand new admirers.
For a mid/high variance game, it offers some great potential with a possible 10,000x bet size up for grabs. Visually NetEnt rarely disappoints, and the more ‘serious’ graphics and artwork on display here (as opposed to the South Park version) do create an entirely different aesthetic to South Park. Which, as a result, works well with the theme.
Whatever the reasons for the demise of South Park Reel Chaos, the creation of Arcane Reel Chaos is a smart move by NetEnt, and a great slot to play.
